Exploring Wiang Kum Kam’s ancient ruins while discovering their hidden treasures will make each visitor feel like Indiana Jones. The historic town of Wiang Kum Kam is located about three miles east of Chiang Mai. Here you might try to solve mysteries, which will keep you busy and excited for many hours.

The thrilling adventure starts at the Museum and Information Centre, where tourist can hire a much used but solid bicycle for the trip to the “Lost City”. A quick look at the provided free map shows how the old town is situated on the Ping River’s eastern shore.

King Mengrai who established the Lanna Kingdom in northern Thailand, founded Wiang Kum Kam more than seven centuries ago, with the aim of making it Lanna’s first capital. However, the story goes that the king later changed his mind and preferred Chiang Mai instead. History of Chiang Mai

Then, about 700 years ago the town’s secrets were buried by mudslides and floods. In 1974 the “Lost City” was rediscovered during the activities of the Fine Arts Department’s restoration project to uncover the ancient constructions. Four metres deep they dug out ancient pagodas, ponds and temples.

Huffing and puffing I ride my bike along the vehicle-free paths network and finally reach the enormous Chiang Khum Temple in the core of Wiang Kum Kam. Next I follow a dirt track north and excitedly discover the Nan Chang Temple. When looking at it from a distance the building resembles a large swimming pool. While approaching I recognise prayer halls, ruined walls and what’s left of a gateway.

In the late afternoon my cycling adventure comes to an end at the Chedi Liam Temple where I enjoy eating a tasty bowl of northern style noodles. Before grabbing my chopsticks, I fantasise about experiencing an adventure a la Indiana Jones and savour the Lost City’s taste.
