As the stifling heat of the city becomes all the more unbearable, take the chance to turn of he air conditioning for a while and relax on a houseboat by Mae Taeng Dam. Just an hour’s drive north of town, the lake is a man-made stretch of water is where Thai families go for short breaks to relax and chill out on the water.

There are a variety of different houseboats to chose from, each normally having a number of basic bedrooms, with foam mattresses and mosquito nets, and cooking facilities including barbecue. Prices are cheap with accommodation coasting around 100 baht per person per night. Plus drinks, food and ice can be provided by proprietors, although it can be cheaper to bring your own.

And relaxing on the floating bamboo huts is a unique experience, with a cool breeze refreshingly drifting over the surface of the lake and plenty of opportunity for fishing, swimming and relaxing. It’s certainly a welcome break from the city and allows stress to dissipate swiftly from tired souls.
