Take a trip to Huay Kaew Falls
Posted by Northerner on October 8th, 2010 filed in Attractions, Day tripsThere are many spectacular waterfalls near Chiang Mai, but the Huay Kaew Falls are certainly the most conveniently located from the city of Chiang Mai. Huay Kaew Falls are situated at the foot of Doi Suthep, just near the zoo, so why not combine this with a trip to the famous Doi Suthep temple for a fantastic day of nature, culture and religion.
This amazing waterfall features 2 falls – Pha Ngerb and Wang Bua Baanthat – which cascade over a 50 metre rock slope into the pristine pool below. This is a very popular place for walking and swimming. Many locals and visitors here also like to take a picnic to enjoy around the falls after cooling off in the water. This is a popular place to visit, so should you like the make a day of it, head to one of the restaurants which overlook the falls for a meal and a fantastic view of the Huay Kaew Falls.
Also of interest here is the monument devoted to the man who built the road up the Doi Suthep Mountain – Khru Ba Srivichai. Many locals come to pay their respects at this monument with offerings of incense, candles, and gold leaf.
The Huay Kaew Falls are free, and are incredibly popular, particularly on weekends. The best time to go would be during the week when the area is much less crowded, allowing you to enjoy the serene and pristine nature of this beautiful waterfall. To get there, take one of the many songtaews which can be hired for the day to take you to the falls, and then up to Doi Suthep Mountain.
