Wat Suan Dok is a very well-known temple situated on Suthep Road. The best way to get there is to hire a red songtaew to take you there, as all drivers will know this temple. Trips to the Wat Suan Dok should usually cost around 20 to 30 baht depending on where you get on.

Wat Suan Dok is a particularly historical temple built in the 14th century. Various parts of the temple have still been re-built, but the architecture still reflects the temple’s history and significance within Chiang Mai. One of the most impressive features of this temple is the Buddha image using the Lanna style of artwork, standing 4.7 metres tall, and composed of 9 pieces.

In the impressive grounds of Wat Suan Dok is a series of small white chedis which contain the remains of the royal family of Chiang Mai. The grounds of Wat Suan Dok are particularly beautiful, and well worth a late afternoon stroll to enjoy the amazing architecture and history of this temple.

One of the most interesting aspects of Wat Suan Dok is its weekly meetings called “monk chat”. The monks at Wat Suan Dok are very friendly, and as many of them are students, they are eager to meet foreigners to practice their English and teach about Buddhism. Joining one of these sessions is completely free, and a great way to learn something fascinating about Buddhism and the local region.
