Wat Chedi Luang is a Buddhist is one of Chiang Mai’s most fascinating and historical temples which has buildings dating back 600 years ago. The temple’s grounds were originally made up of three temples – Wat Sukmin, Wat Hot Tham, and Wat Chedi Luang. Wat Chedi Luang also houses the Lanna campus of the Mahamakut Buddhist University.

This temple is also particularly significant in Thai culture, religion and history as it temporarily housed the most important object in Thailand – the Emerald Buddha. These days, whilst the Emerald Buddha is located in Bangkok, the King of Thailand donated a replica which is now housed in the eastern niche of the chedi.

One of the most intriguing and notable features of this temple is its southern side which is decorated with a number of stone elephant statues. There are also numerous statues of Buddha in various positions of religious significance including the reclining Buddha. Also of particular significance is Chiang Mai city’s guardian spirit post called the lak muang.

Inside Wat Chedi Luang is the imposing statue of the standing Buddha which is well known in the region.

Wat Chedi Luang is a great place to stop and pick up some local artwork and hand-made souvenirs, with many local artists and craftsman selling their works in the large plaza of the chedi.

To get to Wat Chedi Luang, head to Prapokklao Road which runs through the north to south centre line of the old city. It’s open every day and admission is free, although donations to the temple are appreciated. It’s easy to walk to this temple for those staying in the old part of town; alternatively, you can take a songtaew for a very minimal fee.
