Chiang Mai Museum of World Insects
Posted by Northerner on October 7th, 2011 filed in AttractionsThe unusual museum tucked away on a small soi just past Kad Suan Shopping Centre is packed with collections of more than 400 insect species. The Chiang Mai Museum of World Insects is the outcome of Manop Rattanarithikul, AKA the Mosquito Man, and wife Rampa’s lifelong passion for creepy crawlies. The exhibits on display range from miniscule gnats that require a microscope to see them properly through to giant beetles more deserving of the moniker beast.
The entry to the museum gives a glimpse of what is in store for visitors as there are termite and honeycombed insect nest exhibits as well as photographs of insects conducting their daily lives. Guided tours of the museum are usually conducted by the Mosquito Man himself. The cases and slides with lifeless insects on them will give a certain satisfaction to anybody who has ever been plagued by mosquitoes.
Since the museum opened nine years ago, numerous visitors have been delighted by its unique exhibits. The insect museum is open every day from 09:00 to 17:00. Entrance fees are 300 Baht per person with an extra 100 for cameras. The Mosquito Man says the funds raised by the entry fees allows the museum to increase its collections and do more research. The Chiang Mai Museum of World Insects is on Srimankalajarn Road Soi 13. Telephone number 053 211891.
