Wednesday evening at Kad Farang Market
Posted by Northerner on November 18th, 2011 filed in Attractions, shoppingAs the rainy season is well and truly over in Chiang Mai I decided that it was time to start weekly visits to Kad Farang Market on Wednesdays again. The open-air market begins at around 17:30 on Wednesday evening and is an excellent location to sample traditional Thai beverages and snacks not always available at other markets and more modern restaurants.
Drinks including freshly squeezed orange juice and passion fruit juice take the heat of walking around the market. I bought a soup that I hadn’t seen for a long time. For the princely sum of 35 Baht I was able to take home a portion of kapop pla, fish stomach soup with bamboo. Other offerings were spicy catfish salad and freshly made meatballs. Among international delights on offer are Japanese sushi and chicken kebab in pitta bread.
The many regular visitors to Kad Farang, it means foreigner’s market in English, also snap up articles such as cheap second hand clothes, archetypal Thai knick-knacks and souvenirs, shoes and sandals, puppies and rabbits. A few months ago one vendor was selling brand name memory sticks at one third of their normal price. Maybe they were the ubiquitous copies that Thailand is renowned for?
